 ESTRATEGIA 4

Method: Grammar-Translation Method (GTM)

LESSON PLAN: PROFESSIONS AND OCCUPATIONS

Objective: Students will identify and translate vocabulary and basic sentence structures related to professions and occupations from English to Spanish and vice versa.

1. Warm Up (10 minutes)

Objective: Activate prior knowledge and introduce vocabulary.
Activity:

  • The teacher writes on the board the title: "Professions and Occupations".
  • Ask students in Spanish: "¿Qué profesiones conocen en inglés?"
  • Elicit and write a list in English and Spanish (e.g., Doctor / Doctor, Teacher / Maestro, Engineer / Ingeniero).
  • Provide students with a bilingual vocabulary list (10–15 common occupations).

2. Explanation (10 minutes)

Objective: Understand the grammar structure using the verb to be with professions.
Grammar Focus: Subject + verb to be + profession
Examples:

  • I am a doctor. → Yo soy doctor.
  • She is a teacher. → Ella es maestra.
  • They are firefighters. → Ellos son bomberos.

Activity:

  • Write 3–5 example sentences on the board.
  • Translate each sentence into Spanish as a class.
  • Highlight subject pronouns, the verb to be, and the profession.

3. Practice (10 minutes)

Objective: Translate sentences from English to Spanish and vice versa.
Activity:

  • Hand out a worksheet with 8–10 short sentences in English (e.g., “He is a mechanic.” “We are nurses.”).
  • Students translate each sentence into Spanish.
  • Then give the same sentences in Spanish to translate into English.

Note: Encourage the use of the bilingual vocabulary list and grammar structure.

4. Production (10 minutes)

Objective: Use learned vocabulary and grammar to write original sentences.
Activity:

  • Students write 3 original sentences in English using the structure:
[Subject] + [verb to be] + [profession]
Example: “My mother is a nurse.”
  • Then translate the sentences into Spanish.
  • Volunteers read one sentence aloud in English and Spanish.
